Specific neurohistory comes of age: a look back and a lood forward. The Jonas S. Friedenwald memorial lecture.

E JLU Iven though he was no longer alive when I started an ophthalmology residency, Jonas Friedenwald was partly responsible for my acceptance as a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Neurological Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. The head of the Institute at the time was Louis Flexner, who had been a collaborator and friend of Friedenwald's at Johns Hopkins in the 1940's. In our initial interview, Dr. Flexner mentioned two names to me: Friedenwald and Polyak; he thought highly of both men and advised me to emulate them.
